Gerbil Cages - Information & Tips

Here you can learn which one are good for you furry friend.

Bird Cages

A bird cage will not work because the wires can harm the gerbils. Also, they can kick all the bedding out and make a giant mess. They also will not have enough space.

Aquarium

One of the best type of cages is a fish tank or aquarium. These provide safe environments for the gerbils, they cannot kick out the bedding and they are best for viewing the gerbils as well. A 20 gallon is the best size for 2 gerbils, but the more space you can give them to play or run around the bettter. So if you can get a 30 or 40 gallon then go for it!

Glass Cabinet

A glass cabinet requires some DIY, but it is a great alternative for a gerbil cage. They are in general huge and very cheap to get . Especially second hand.

If you are going to get gerbils, you might want to buy a second cage to keep the gerbils safe while cleaning out their main cage.

Standard Gerbil Cages

Unfortunately the standard hamster and gerbil cages (see image on the right) sold at general pet stores are not really suitable for gerbils. They do look cute and colorful, but the gerbils will not be happy in them. The area to run and play around is too small for them and the plastic inside the cage could be harmful.

It is possible to buy tunnels and extensions for cages like this to increase their living space, but they will need close supervision in cages like this.
